解码中国 | 这个英国人在浙江找到了答案

近期，《潮涌之江：中国发展看“浙”里》中英文版图书由外文出版社出版。该书由外文出版社荣誉英文主编、中国政府友谊奖获得者大卫·弗格森执笔，他用十余万字讲述了自己在浙江寻找中国发展密码的故事。

Recently, the Chinese and English editions of the book China’s Development in the New Era - the Zhejiang Experiencewere published by Foreign Languages Press. The book is authored by David W. Ferguson, honorary chief English editor at Foreign Languages Press and a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award. In over 60,000 words, he narrates his story of seeking the keys to China's development in Zhejiang.

从一个省的变化来看待中国的发展，是大卫写这本书的初衷。在开始访问浙江之前，大卫做了大量的“预习功课”。他时常埋头于文献资料里，笔记本上写满了问题。

Ferguson’s intention for writing this book was to explore China’s development through the changes in a single province. Before visiting Zhejiang, he carried out extensive preparatory work, during which he often immersed himself in relevant literature and filled his notebooks with questions.

数个世纪以来，浙江一直是一个充满活力的地方，尤其是进入 21 世纪之后的这 20 多年里，浙江发生了翻天覆地的变化，成为中国发展的先驱省份之一。大卫说，他的浙江之行就是去探究这背后的原因。

For centuries, Zhejiang has been a vigorous region. And particularly in the past two decades of the 21st century, it has undergone tremendous changes, becoming one of the pioneering provinces in China’s development. Ferguson said that his journey in Zhejiang aims to investigate the reasons behind this transformation.

2023年，大卫在浙江采访了“绿水青山就是金山银山”理念诞生地安吉余村、“垦荒精神”发源地台州大陈岛、宁波舟山港、义乌国际商贸城、吉利集团等，从外国人的视角进行观察，从民营经济、对外开放、数字经济、绿色生产力等角度切入，写出了自己对浙江可持续发展的深层思考，图文并茂地向世界讲述了以浙江为代表的中国发展故事。

In2023, Ferguson visited a broad range of locations in Zhejiang, including Yucun in Anji, a village where the philosophy "Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" was first put forward, the Dachen Islands in Taizhou, the birthplace of the Spirit of Reclamation, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, Yiwu International Trade Market, and the automotive manufacturer Geely. His book delves into Zhejiang from perspectives including opening up, the private economy, the digital economy, and green productivity. Ferguson shares his ideas about Zhejiang’s contribution to China’s sustainable development trajectory.

其实，这不是大卫第一次来浙江。他是浙江的常客，经常受邀参加世界互联网大会乌镇峰会、和合文化全球论坛等重要活动，但每次都来去匆匆。在2023年这次访问之旅中，他去了更多地方，结交了许多朋友，也有了很多“第一次”。

This was not Ferguson’s first visit to Zhejiang. He was frequently invited to important events like the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit and the Global Forum on Hehe Culture. However, his stay was always brief. During his visit in 2023, he explored more locations, made many friends, and experienced numerous firsts.

在杭州外桐坞村和衢州余东村，他惊讶于做农活的手拿起画笔，农业与艺术奇妙融合；在莫干山，他参加了一场跑山赛，成为唯一一个60岁以上的男选手，还取得了10公里组第26名的好成绩；他还认识了许多数字游民，体验了一种新的办公形态……

In Hangzhou’s Waitongwu village and Quzhou’s Yudong village, he was amazed to see farmers picking up paintbrushes, blending agriculture with art. In Moganshan Mountain, being the only male competitor over 60, he achieved a commendable 26th place in the 10-km group in a mountain running race. He also met many digital nomads and experienced a new form of work...

旅程结束时，大卫说：“我可以满怀信心地在产业发展、城乡协调、生态保护、人文建设等各个方面给浙江人民打出高分。”
